Agrometeorology and plant disease management: a happy marriage Scientia Agricola
Gillespie,Terry James; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
Many plant disease outbreaks are triggered by suitably warm temperatures during periods of leaf wetness. Measurements or estimations of leaf wetness duration provided by Agrometeorologists have allowed Plant Pathologists to devise weather timed spray schemes which often reduce the number of sprays required to control plant diseases, thus lowering costs and benefitting the environment. In the near future, tools such as numerical weather models with small grid spacings, and improved weather radar, are expected to reduce the need for tight networks of surface observations. The weather models will also provide growers with forecast warnings of potential upcoming disease outbreaks, which will further enhance the contribution of agrometeorology to plant disease...

Brazilian maize genotypes sensitivity to water deficit estimated through a simple crop yield model PAB
Andrioli,Kleber Gustavo; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
The objective of this work was to determine the sensitivity of maize (Zea mays) genotypes to water deficit, using a simple agrometeorological crop yield model. Crop actual yield and agronomic data of 26 genotypes were obtained from the Maize National Assays carried out in ten locations, in four Brazilian states, from 1998 to 2006. Weather information for each experimental location and period were obtained from the closest weather station. Water deficit sensitivity index (Ky) was determined using the crop yield depletion model. Genotypes can be divided into two groups according to their resistance to water deficit. Normal resistance genotypes had Ky ranging from 0.4 to 0.5 in vegetative period, 1.4 to 1.5 in flowering, 0.3 to 0.6 in fruiting, and 0.1 to 0.3...

Bromeliads production in greenhouses associated to different shading screens Horticultura Brasileira
Holcman,Ester; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
Bromeliads production in greenhouses is highly influenced by microclimate, which affects plants growth and development. Based on that, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of shading screens of different colors on microclimatic variables and Aechmea fasciata bromeliad growth in a greenhouse covered by transparent low-density polyethylene. The experiment had five treatments, with screens of different colors, inside a plastic greenhouse: thermo-reflective (T1); control without screen (T2); red (T3); blue (T4); and black (T5) screens, all of them with 70% of shading. From the 60 plants arranged in each one of the treatments 24 were evaluated, which were obtained randomly. The statistical design was completely randomized for the biometric variables. An...

Meireles,Elza Jacqueline Leite; Pereira,Antonio Roberto; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Stone,Luis Fernando; Zimmermann,Francisco José Pfeilsticker.
Simulation models are important tools for the analysis of cultivated systems to estimate the performance of crops in different environments. The CROPGRO- model (DSSAT) was calibrated and validated using Carioca bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to estimate yield and the development of the crop, sown in three row spacings (0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 m) and two fertilization rates (300 and 500 kg ha-1 of 4-30-16 N-P-K), in Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO, Brazil. To calibrate the model a combination of the genetic coefficients that characterize the phenology and morphology of the dry bean crop was used to obtain the best possible fit between predicted and observed anthesis and physiological maturity dates, leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM), yield components, and...

Cherry tomato yield in greenhouses with different plastic covers Ciência Rural
Holcman,Ester; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Mello,Simone da Costa.
ABSTRACT: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different plastic covers on microclimate and cherry tomato yield in greenhouses. The experiments were carried out in Piracicaba, state of São Paulo (Brazil), during three growing periods (2008/2009/2010). A greenhouse was divided in: Environment I (EI) - covered with plastic film anti-UV and thermo-reflective shading screen, and Environment II (EII) - covered with diffusive plastic film; monitored with automatic weather sensors; and cultivated with cherry tomato (‘Sweet Grape’ and ‘Sweet Million’). Use of diffusive plastic in greenhouses provides a better inside distribution of solar energy without causing major changes in air temperature and relative humidity, resulting in...

Climate changes and technological advances: impacts on sugarcane productivity in tropical southern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Gouvêa,Júlia Ribeiro Ferreira; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Gazzola,Samuel Thomazella; Santos,Marcelo Cabral.
The climatic projections for this century indicate the possibility of severe consequences for human beings, especially for agriculture where adverse effects to productivity of crops and to agribusiness as a whole may occur. An agrometeorological model was used to estimate sugarcane yield in tropical southern Brazil, based on future A1B climatic scenarios presented in the fourth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, in 2007. Sugarcane yield was evaluated for 2020, 2050, and 2080 considering the possible impacts caused by changes in temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours and CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, as well as technological advances. Increasingly higher temperatures will cause an increase of the potential productivity (PP), since...

Climatic effects on sugarcane ripening under the influence of cultivars and crop age Scientia Agricola
Cardozo,Nilceu Piffer; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
The lack of information about the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on the sugarcane (Saccharum ssp.) crop yield and quality has been the primary factor impacting the sugar-ethanol sector in Brazil. One of the processes about which we do not have a satisfactory understanding is sugarcane ripening and the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on that. Sugarcane ripening is the process of sucrose accumulation in stalks, which is heavily influenced by several factors, mainly by climatic conditions such as air temperature and water deficits. Because it is a complex process, studies of the variables involved in sugarcane ripening can provide important information, resulting in a better use of commercial cultivars, bringing advantages to growers,...

Climatic risk for potato late blight in the Andes region of Venezuela Scientia Agricola
Garcia,Beatriz Ibet Lozada; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Tapia,Luciano Roberto; Sparovek,Gerd.
Potato is an important crop for Venezuelan agriculture. However, its production is highly affected by late blight (Phytophtora infestans), since weather is commonly favorable for this disease. The aim of this study was to determine the sowing dates of low climatic risk for potato late blight in the Andes region of Venezuela, with an agrometeorological disease model and geographical information system (GIS) tools. The disease model used in this study was developed by Hyre (1954) which requires daily rainfall and temperature data which were obtained from 106 weather stations, located at the States of Mérida, Táchira, and Trujillo, for a period of 31 years. Hyre's model was applied for all stations obtainig the following variables: number of disease favorable...

Battisti,Rafael; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Pilau,Felipe Gustavo; Wollmann,Cássio Arthur.

Environmental group identification for upland rice production in central Brazil Scientia Agricola
Heinemann,Alexandre Bryan; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
Upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) production is basically concentrated in four central Brazilian States, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Rondônia and Tocantins. To reduce the genotype and environment (G × E) interactions, the classification of environment groups was proposed. The goal of this study explores possibilities to adjust the upland rice regional breeding systems to optimally fit to the range of environments they are targeting, based on a historical yield data set of the Brazilian Geographic and Statistics Institute (IBGE, www.ibge.gov.br/home/) from 54 microregions. The specific objectives of this study were: (i) to identify and classify environmental groups in the Brazilian upland rice production area; (ii) to validate these environmental groups using yield...

Estimating leaf wetness duration over turfgrass, and in a 'Niagara Rosada' vineyard, in a subtropical environment Scientia Agricola
Lulu,Jorge; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Pedro Júnior,Mário José; Pezzopane,José Ricardo Macedo; Blain,Gabriel Constantino.
Leaf wetness duration (LWD) is a key parameter in agrometeorology because it is related to plant disease occurrence. As LWD is seldomly measured in a standard weather station it must be estimated to run warning systems for schedule chemical disease control. The objective of the present study was to estimate LWD over turfgrass considering different models with data from a standard weather station, and to evaluate the correlation between estimated LWD over turfgrass and LWD measured in a 'Niagara Rosada' vineyard, cultivated in a hedgerow training system, in Jundiaí, São Paulo State, Brazil. The wetness sensors inside the vineyard were located at the top of the plants, deployed at an inclination angle of 45º and oriented southwest, with three replications....

Modeling of corn yield in Brazil as a function of meteorological conditions and technological level PAB
Monteiro,José Eduardo Boffino de Almeida; Assad,Eduardo Delgado; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Azevedo,Letícia da Costa.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate a method for estimating corn yield using a minimum number of parameters and limited information about crop management. The proposed method estimates potential and attainable yields based on the technological level of the production systems and on relatively simple agrometeorological models. Corn yield was estimated for the crop seasons from 2000/2001 to 2007/2008, considering several locations and regions in Brazil, and was compared with the actual yield data from official surveys. There was a high correlation between the estimated and observed yield (0.76≤R2<0.92; p<0.01), with model efficiency (E1’) ranging from 0.45 to 0.73; mean relative error (MRE) between -0.9 and 2.4%; and mean...

Obtaining weather data for input to crop disease-warning systems: leaf wetness duration as a case study Scientia Agricola
Gleason,Mark L.; Duttweiler,Katrina B.; Batzer,Jean C.; Taylor,S. Elwynn; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Monteiro,José Eduardo Boffino Almeida; Gillespie,Terry J..
Disease-warning systems are decision support tools designed to help growers determine when to apply control measures to suppress crop diseases. Weather data are nearly ubiquitous inputs to warning systems. This contribution reviews ways in which weather data are gathered for use as inputs to disease-warning systems, and the associated logistical challenges. Grower-operated weather monitoring is contrasted with obtaining data from networks of weather stations, and the advantages and disadvantages of measuring vs. estimating weather data are discussed. Special emphasis is given to leaf wetness duration (LWD), not only because LWD data are inputs to many disease-warning systems but also because accurate data are uniquely challenging to obtain. It is concluded...

Performance of cylindrical leaf wetness duration sensors in a tropical climate condition Scientia Agricola
Santos,Eduardo Alvarez; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Gillespie,Terry James; Lulu,Jorge.
Leaf wetness duration (LWD) measurements are required for disease warning in several agricultural systems, since it is an important variable for the diagnose of plant disease epidemiology. The cylindrical sensor is an inexpensive and simple electronic LWD sensor initially designed to measure this variable for onions, however some studies show that it may be helpful for standard measurements in weather stations and also for different crops. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess their performance under tropical climate conditions, in Brazil, having as standard measurements those obtained by flat plate sensors, which have presented very good performance when compared with visual observations. Before field assessments, all LWD sensors used in...

Possible influences of pacific decadal oscillation in the ten day based radio between actual and potential evapotranspiration in the region of Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil Bragantia
Blain,Gabriel Constantino; Kayano,Mary Toshie; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Lulu,Jorge.
Considering the importance of the ratio between the actual and potential evapotranspiration (AE/PE) for agricultural purposes, the present study estimated the 10-day based AE/PE, aiming to evaluate possible influences of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), on temporal variability series, in the region of Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. The shapes of the beta probability density function of the AE/PE series for four periods (two in the cold PDO phase and two in the warm PDO phase) do not show differences between the PDO phases. In this sense, the use of "average periods" to obtain a standard climatology for agrometeorological purposes (such as the climate normal of the 1961-1990 period, which encompasses sixteen years of the cold PDO phase and...
